Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens (Black, 2022 Version)

Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Overview

One of the most versatile lenses for M-mount rangefinders, the upgraded 2022 version of the Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. is a general wide-angle lens characterized by its sophisticated optics and bright f/1.4 maximum aperture. Offered here in black, this lens is well-suited for available light photography and affords outstanding control over depth of field for selective focus shooting techniques.

The lens features a newly engineered double cam unit that decreases the minimum focusing distance to just 1.3', enabling dynamic close-up imagery. Additionally, the lens has been upgraded with eleven aperture blades from the original nine for visibly improved bokeh performance. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element to control spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and clarity, and a floating elements system is used to maintain performance throughout the focusing range. A newly designed pull-out lens hood has also been integrated into the front of the lens to minimize ghosting and flare by blocking out stray light.

Versatile general wide-angle prime features a bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture to benefit working in low-light conditions and for greater control over depth of field.
Improved minimum focusing distance of just 1.3' enables dynamic close-up imagery.
One aspherical element controls spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness.
Floating elements system achieves consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.
Upgraded eleven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
Newly designed with an integrated pull-out lens hood, the front of the lens also includes 46mm-diameter threads to accept optional filters.

    Excellent!

Very, very good! Feels heavier than the 35mm f/2.00 but it's just the same. I don't like the built in hood. Looks like something is missing. Awkward to handle and focus unless using zone focusing. The closest focusing is better than the older model. let's in lots of light and is much faster than f/2.0.

    An Upgraded Improvement

I was such a fan of the older Leica Summilux-M 35mm that I was worried about parting ways with it to get this newer version. However, after using it for several months I can honestly say that I have no worries whatsoever. Leica has done such a good job of keeping the wonderful character of the older lens and refining it further by adding close focusing and smoother bokeh. It's a fantastic lens that works well for my photographic needs to be able to get closer to subjects. This has unlocked so many more possibilities with my work. Yes, you do need to use the screen or EVF for close focusing, but this certainly isn't a dealbreaker in any way. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw an integrated EVF in an M12 someday.

Coming to you with free floating aperture blades

Leica's QC has gone from bad to worse... not only are wait times almost infinite with some lenses, this lens had most of its early samples come with broken aperture mechanism leading to free floating blades. I declined a good price for the FLE I version in order to wait for this, just for Leica to send out this rubbish and then halt production until whenever due to their QC issues which are not unique to this lens.
