Product details

Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 Overview

Designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 is a sleek and compact standard-length prime. Its 50mm focal length is ideally suited for portraiture, landscapes, and all-purpose shooting and provides a modestly bright f/1.8 maximum aperture for shallow depth of field control. An extra-low dispersion element and an ultra-high refractive index element reduce chromatic aberration and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy, and the lens provides excellent sharpness as well. A linear autofocus motor suppresses focus breathing and delivers smooth, precise, and near silent focusing performance. Made for tough environmental conditions, the lens also features a dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant design.

Prime standard-length lens designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, however, can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture offers control over depth of field and suits working in low-light conditions.
Three aspherical lenses including an extra-low dispersion element and an ultra-high refractive index element reduce chromatic aberration and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Linear autofocus motor suppresses focus breathing and delivers smooth, precise, and near silent focusing performance.
Benefitting professional video applications, linear focus ring control for mechanical-based follow focus systems moves the focus at a constant speed in accordance with the rotating angle of the focus ring.
High resolution sharpness and performance to support 4K video.
Smooth exposure changes by micro-step aperture control for video applications.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant design for increased protection from the elements.

    Not just good, great!

This lens is not just great for the price, it is great period. It is exceedingly sharp wide-open and has some of the most pleasing rendering I have ever seen, even when compared to Leica-Certified Lumix lenses I have owned in the past. I was worried that f1.8 would not be shallow enough for my needs, but this lens renders out of focus areas beautifully - it is always silky smooth and never busy, even when shooting in visually-dense woodland environments at a medium distance. The transitions between in-focus and out of focus areas are beautiful. I find the lens sharper than I will ever need for video AND for stills - even wide open. The auto-focus is fast and accurate, the weather sealing has already been handy on multiple occasions and the adjustable focus throw is a really great feature. I have never detected any perceivable focus breathing in real-world videography. The lens is a little large with the lens hood attached but super light weight. Now I need to save up for the 35mm and the other lenses in this lineup!

    Surpassed my expectations

This lens has definitely surpassed my expectations. We are a production house that has several S1, S1H, and S5s on gimbals in the field every day. I'm aware of the obvious advantages of native glass, but I did not expect this lens to outperform our adapted Canon 50mm 1.2 lenses; however, it does, by a significant margin. The autofocus performance is noticeably better than the 85mm and 20-60mm, both of which are surprisingly good. This lens is a no-brainer for video work... We don't do a lot of stills work, so I'll defer to others more knowledgeable than I on that front. In short, I'm not ready to offload my Canon glass yet... but this lens gets me one giant step closer. I will update my review once this lens has endured the rigors of being in the field for a more significant amount of time.

An Essential for Lumix Full Frame Shooters

I'm currently using this on my Panasonic S5 and have been very impressed with the versatility of this lens. I work full-time shooting corporate videos/photos and plan to use this as a primary lens for interviews and detail shots (and occasionally for portraiture). Even though it doesn't have Panasonic's Pro label, everything about this lens is more than suitable for professional applications -- the quality of the image is tack sharp, AF is great, doesn't weigh much (but not in the way that feels cheap), great form factor, and good price. I'm looking forward to their future release of both the 35mm & 24mm lenses in this series as Panasonic has really outdone themselves with this one!

    Good. Not Great. Recommended.

I bought this lens to have a relatively fast 50mm and affordable lens for my SL2. I would add that this lens is also light weight and balance well on my SL2. Wide open at f1.8 images are a little soft including in the center. Stopped down just a taste, to f2, and the center sharpens up nicely. While this lens does provide ample Bokeh, small areas such as leaves, can appear busy and choppy when viewed on-screen at 100%. Otherwise this lens, for the money, performs well. I would recommend this lens to someone using an SL2 (and probably an original SL).

    A Truly Good Lens

Lens is absolutely wonderful. Super sharp, super fast, and at a price point that's really hard to beat for a lens of this quality. I have yet to use it for video, but I am so far impressed with its quality. Excited to try the other lenses in its line.
